Fast Fashion Cost Calculator (Cost Per Wear)

Work out your annual fast-fashion spend and cost per wear, and compare it with buying fewer, longer-lasting quality pieces for the same number of wears.

Overview

Fast fashion looks cheap per item but is often expensive per wear, because the pieces are discarded quickly. This calculator shows your annual fast-fashion spend and the true cost per wear.

It then compares your habit with buying fewer, longer-lasting quality pieces that deliver the same number of wears, so you can see the real trade-off.

How to read the result

What it means
The displayed value is an estimate based on your inputs. It represents the calculated scenario under current assumptions, not a guaranteed amount.
Next step
Use the result as a starting point. Adjust parameters to compare scenarios and validate with a professional when needed.
Calculation limits
The model uses simplified formulas and cannot account for all variables in your specific case (local regulations, personal conditions, temporal changes).

Methodology

Annual fast-fashion spend = items per month x average price x 12.

Cost per wear = price of an item / number of wears before it is discarded. Lower is better.

To compare fairly, the tool counts the total wears your fast-fashion wardrobe gives in a year (items x 12 x wears each), then prices the same number of wears using quality pieces: (total wears / wears per quality item) x quality price.

Saving = fast-fashion annual spend - the quality cost for the same wears. Figures are estimates; durability and how often you actually wear items vary a lot.

Key takeaways

See your yearly fast-fashion spend and cost per wear, then compare with quality pieces for the same number of wears.

Worked examples

3 items/month at $25, worn 7 times

Three $25 items a month, each worn 7 times, versus $90 quality pieces worn 50 times.

Interpretation

You spend $900 a year, at $3.57 per wear. Quality pieces cost $1.80 per wear; covering the same 252 wears with quality costs about $454, saving roughly $446 a year.

Heavy shopper, low wears

Five $20 items a month worn only 5 times, vs $80 pieces worn 60 times.

Interpretation

$1,200 a year at $4.00 per wear; quality is $1.33 per wear and would save several hundred dollars for the same wears.

Frequently asked questions

What is cost per wear?

It is the price of a garment divided by how many times you wear it. A cheap item worn a few times can cost more per wear than a pricier item worn for years.

Why compare to quality pieces?

Because the headline price hides the real cost. Buying fewer, durable items that you wear many times often works out cheaper per wear and per year, with less waste.

How do I estimate wears per item?

Be honest about how long things last for you. Studies suggest the average garment is worn only 7-10 times; durable basics can reach 50-200 wears.
