Overview

Council Tax in England depends on two things: which valuation band your home is in (A to H, based on its estimated value on 1 April 1991) and the Band D charge set each year by your local council. Every band is a fixed legal proportion of the Band D figure.

Enter your area's Band D charge and choose your band to estimate your annual and monthly Council Tax, including the 25% single-person discount.

Key takeaways

Estimate your England Council Tax from your band and your area's Band D charge using the statutory proportions (A = 6/9 to H = 18/9), with the 25% single-person discount.

Worked examples

Band D home, area Band D charge £2,280

A Band D property where the council's Band D charge is £2,280, two or more adults.

Interpretation

Band D proportion is 1, so the annual charge is £2,280 — about £228 a month over 10 instalments or £190 over 12.

Band B home, single occupant

A Band B property in the same area (Band D £2,280), with the 25% single-person discount.

Interpretation

Band B is 7/9 of Band D = £1,773.33; the 25% discount brings it to £1,330.00 a year (about £133 a month over 10 instalments).

Frequently asked questions

How are Council Tax bands decided?

In England, your band is based on what your property was worth on 1 April 1991, not its current value. The Valuation Office Agency assigns the band. You can check and, if you think it is wrong, challenge your band on GOV.UK.

Why is each band a fraction of Band D?

The law fixes every band as a proportion of Band D in ninths (A is 6/9, H is 18/9). This means a council only sets one figure — the Band D rate — and all other bands are calculated from it automatically.

What is the single-person discount?

If you are the only adult living in a property, you get a 25% reduction on the bill. Some occupants (such as full-time students) are 'disregarded', which can also qualify a household for the discount.

Does this work for Wales and Scotland?

Not exactly. Wales has nine bands (A–I) based on 2003 values, and Scotland applies different multipliers to the higher bands. This calculator uses the England proportions. Check your council's website for the exact local figures.
